University of Karachi to Transition Associate Degree Programs to Semester-Based System
The University of Karachi (KU) has announced a groundbreaking shift in its academic structure by transitioning the Associate Degree (AD) programs in Arts, Science, and Commerce—previously known as B.A., B.Sc., and B.Com—to a semester-based system. This change, applicable to affiliated public and private colleges, is set to replace the traditional annual examination format with a more dynamic and standardized approach.
Key Features of the Transition
- Semester-Based Structure
Under the new system, students will undergo two examination cycles annually, each covering half of the syllabus. The academic year will be divided into two six-month semesters, including five months of teaching and examinations. - Alignment with HEC Policies
The move adheres to the Higher Education Commission’s (HEC) updated guidelines on Associate Degrees, which aim to standardize the two-year graduation system nationwide. - Evaluation System
The exams will carry 100 marks per subject and will be managed by the University of Karachi’s Examination Department. This centralization accommodates both regular and private candidates, maintaining consistency and fairness across the board. - Biannual Semester Design
The University of Karachi is terming this system “Biannual,” setting it apart from the traditional annual system. It ensures better syllabus distribution and allows for more frequent assessments, enhancing the academic experience. - Proposed Policy for Marks Distribution
Unlike the traditional semester system where colleges assess 40% of marks and universities evaluate 60%, KU’s Examination Department will handle the entire 100-mark exams to ensure uniformity, especially for private candidates not affiliated with colleges.
Approval and Implementation
The proposal, presented by Professor Dr. Anila Amber Malik, Secretary of KU’s Affiliation Committee, is set to be reviewed during the Academic Council meeting on December 3. If approved, the semester-based structure will apply to all new admissions in the AD programs at affiliated colleges.
Pioneering Change in Pakistan
Currently, most public sector universities in Pakistan have been running AD programs under an annual examination system for the past four years. If implemented, KU will be the first major university in the country to adopt a semester-based model for AD programs.
Benefits of the Semester System
- Frequent Assessments: Students will be evaluated twice a year, ensuring regular feedback and better retention of knowledge.
- Standardized Education: Aligning with HEC guidelines enhances the credibility and recognition of degrees nationwide.
- Flexibility for Private Candidates: The centralized examination approach accommodates independent learners, broadening access to quality education.
Conclusion
The University of Karachi’s decision to transition its Associate Degree programs to a semester-based system marks a significant step toward modernizing higher education in Pakistan. By aligning with global and national standards, KU is paving the way for a more efficient, inclusive, and quality-driven academic structure. Once approved, this initiative promises to benefit thousands of students by enhancing their learning experience and preparing them for academic and professional succes
